A LABORATORY OF GASTRONOMY WITH ALENTEJO IN ITS HEART

Located in the centre of Alter do Chão, in the Alto Alentejo, Páteo Real is truly an homage to its region.

The history of Páteo Real goes back 25 years, starting with Sr. Arlindo and Dona Luísa, the former owners of the restaurant, before Chef Filipe Ramalho took charge. Upon asking Chef Filipe Ramalho to carry on their legacy, they had only one request: to keep the name and logo of “their” Páteo Real.

A promise that has always been and continues to be honoured. When visiting Páteo Real,you'll find two indoor dining rooms and the unmistakable outdoor patio (or “páteo”, in portuguese). The menu honours the best Alentejo has to offer. Local producers are our greatest partners and the seasonality of their products is one of the main aspects to be respected in our cuisine.

Chef

Born and raised in Alentejo, to parents who were cooks, Filipe Ramalho has a degree in Gastronomy and Culinary Arts from the Estoril School of Hospitality and Tourism. He began his career at Ljubomir Stanisic's Bistro "100 Maneiras", but it was at the Basilii Restaurant, housed in the Torre de Palma Wine Hotel in Monforte, that for six years he sought to show the world his Alentejo identity – strongly supported by the region's endogenous products and the traditional techniques of its gastronomy. In partnership with local producers, they developed the "Farinheira de Castanha de Marvão", a product which led to a unique creation: the "Tarte de Farinheira de Castanha com Pera Bêbeda®" (a tart), which is now a registered trademark.

He attended the largest gastronomic event in Latin America, called "Rio Gastronomia", in Rio de Janeiro, where he presented a mini-documentary about his Alentejo culinary influences. The video featured his maternal grandparents: the grandfather explained the harshness of the work and of the land where they lived; and the grandmother demonstrated her recipe for Açorda Alentejana.

He is currently a lecturer at the Portalegre School of Hospitality and Tourism and is tending the cookers at the emblematic Páteo Real Restaurant in Alter do Chão, which he now owns.

Luís is Páteo's newest member and cook.

A versatile talent who, at one time or another, has performed all the roles that one might expect in a restaurant. He was born in Portalegre and was already an experienced chef in the Alentejo cuisine. His eagerness to find new gastronomic directions and his dedication to elevating our menu express both a passion for cooking and a commitment to providing unique experiences for Páteo Real's customers.

And his culinary knowledge elevates the experience of those who taste his creations.

Albertina is our kitchen helper and she's from Montalegre.

She is a strong-willed woman, fearless in her work and always ready to lend a hand. Her friendliness and good humour light up the atmosphere, making her not only a key element in the efficiency of the tasks she carries out at Páteo, but also a presence that inspires the whole team.

A historic town in the Alto Alentejo
CASTLE OF ALTER PEDROSO

A fortice of Islamic origin, conquered in 1160 by King Afonso Henriques with the help of the Knights Templar, to whom it was bestowed.

Made of slate masonry and lime mortar, it preserves only sections of the wall without battlements between three circular turrets and traces of a fourth one.
